We were asked to analyze a music blog post in order to help us prepare Proximity's fall survey. I have incorporated my summary of John Borland’s article New technology could help squelch digital music piracy. I suggest we discuss this new break through technology called Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM)

What is Content Protection for Recordable Media?:
CPRM is a hardware device that serves as a way to keep consumers from copying copy written files directly onto their hard drives. This technology will ultimately end illegal downloading of music and video files.

Wait Time:
Although this might sound like a break through in ending illegal downloading, there are steep hurdles CPRM must go though before it gets passed.

1) It will more than likely affect removable data storage, such as Zip drives or Flash memory cards used in MP3 players.
2) It must pass expectation from the National Committee for Information Technology.

Questions for focus group:
Although it is far from approval, two big computer companies, IBM and SanDisk, are already considering implementing CPRM. This idea generates many questions

  • Will CPRM becomes a requirement for all new computers?
  • How will websites such as Youtube be affected?
  • How would this effect record sales?
